Immigrant Welcoming Team
The Immigrant Welcoming Team carries out the church’s commitment to welcome immigrants and refugees and accompany them in their resettlement process in the United States. Navigating the complex bureaucracies of the U.S. government, healthcare, and educational systems is daunting. The Immigrant Welcoming Team, with help from church members and community friends, supports these newcomers on their journey toward citizenship. Macalester Plymouth United Church (MPUC) is called to this mission by the teachings of Jesus Christ and the sacred scriptures.
In recent years MPUC has sheltered in our church building guests seeking sanctuary from deportation or seeking asylum from violence in their country of origin. In addition, MPUC sponsored a refugee family from Rwanda, Africa, that includes six children and their parents. Accompanying people brings our church community closer to the realities of our world neighbors. The relationships developed with these new friends deepen our understanding of Christian love. To support immigrant youth that have become part of our church community, we have started a scholarship fund to support them in paying for higher education or job training.
