The View From Here

I have a lovely quilt in my office. It was handmade and given to me by Barbara Morse, a wonderful and wise congregation member who served on the staff at my previous church in Berkeley. It is made up of 300 woven squares of all different colors. When she gave it to me, she said she made all the squares during church meetings. Can you imagine how many church meetings she must have attended? The quilt is a warm reminder of her and the creative ways God weaves us together as the church.

Our Advent theme, Words for the Beginning, is accompanied by images of quilt squares. Thanks to the Sanctuary Arts Team, the parements on the lectern and pulpit will have different geometric patterns each week. Each pattern accompanies a scripture reading. See what connections you can make to the reading. Each week, we will be lifting a phrase out of the beautiful words around the birth of Jesus that are grounding and life giving. You are a blessing! We Can't Go Alone.

As we wrap ourselves in the powerful affirmations of this story, we are woven more deeply into the incarnation of the love at the center of it, embodying it for one another. Our awareness of and grounding in God's embodied love will be needed and tested in the months ahead. Have a blessed Advent!
