By Sherryl Livingston and Deb Mackay, Deacons Co-chairs

The MPUC Deacons team fill a special role focused on the caring needs of our congregation. The Deacons provide congregational care by supporting and connecting. Some of the ways we do this are:

  • Host receptions for those who have lost family members. This year the Deacons hosted several receptions attended by hundreds of people, with the help of dozens of others (“Beacons”) who baked, served, washed dishes and planned. These receptions are loving acts to honor the members of our congregation and their families.

  • Visit congregation members. The Deacons visit those unable to attend services to keep these beloved members connected with our church community.

  • Write cards and send care packages. The Deacons send cards for important events, and cookies to church youth after their first semester in college.

  • Manage the prayer chain to share prayer requests for those in need.

  • Arrange transport for those who need a ride to church.

  • Distribute financial support to community service organizations.

  • Provide care kits for persons in need who visit our church.

Deacons meet monthly except in July, and enjoy fellowship with each other while reporting on our tasks. This spring we had a Deacons backyard potluck together.

Why do Deacons do all this? All these are acts of caring. Caring creates our community.

We are thankful for the faithful service of Deacons Jon-Despotes Turdot, Penny Heubach, Pam Nelson, Abby McKenzie, Monnie Anderson, Laurie Kemp, Mike Vento, Kathleen Vellenga, Connie Lindberg and Charlie Kurtz. You make this happen!
