Rob Ramer Book Event
Congregation member Rob Ramer has published a novel, Crashing into America: A Radical Passage from India, using the pen name of Robbie Orr to honor his Scots heritage. He will be staging a Book Happening.
Crashing Into America provides a unique perspective for understanding the chaos of America today. The USA is still in an identity crisis that began in the 1960s. Set in India and Iowa, the book explores how the crisis developed in the small American missionary community in South India and Grinnell College in Iowa. Jamie is constantly searching for identity, from childhood terrors at a mountain top boarding school in India to a young adult landing in America in the throes of the Vietnam War.
In the Sixties, young Black activists, along with their mentors and allies destroyed Jim Crow, the US apartheid that ruled the South for 100 years. In the Seventies, activists of all colors built a peace movement that stopped a war for the first time in America’s violent history. Since then, women have consistently struggled and won new rights. Same-sex marriage became commonplace. The book traces how one small boy grew and became a small part of those big movements.
