Spring Deacon’s Report

Deacon Board Mission: creating and sustaining a culture of care in the congregation. Deb Mackay and Sherryl Livingston, co-chairs.

  • A major focus of the Deacons is visiting, keeping in contact, and sending cards to people in our congregation who contend with illness or are unable to attend services in person. Every deacon is assigned one or two people who receive ongoing attention. Deacons believe this is the most fulfilling part of our work. We also maintain the prayer request list, share requests with the congregation prayer chain, and send sympathy cards to members who have lost a loved one.

  • The Deacons organize and provide volunteers for all aspects of memorial service receptions. This requires about 20 volunteers for each service, including bakers, set-up, kitchen help, servers, and cleanup. If anyone is willing to help with future services, please contact Penny Heubach, Deb, or Sherryl. In recent months we have hosted three memorial receptions attended by over 100 people each time. Thank you to all those who have helped with these important community events.

  • May was an especially busy month for providing support to those who are sick or undergoing medical care, including providing transportation and meals. Many thanks to all who help, not only those who are deacons but others who volunteer.

  • Deacons are involved with other supportive efforts, including assembling community assistance kits, creating and distributing prayer shawls, care packages for students, distributing small grants to community organizations, and organizing rides to church.

  • The Deacons are assisted by additional volunteers known as “beacons” - people who are occasionally willing to bake, give rides, or help in other specific ways. We will highlight the duties of the “beacons” on a special Sunday in October 2023.

  • Did you know that the Deacons organize the Easter flower sales and set up the Easter flower display in the sanctuary?! We distributed the arrangements to our care contacts after Easter.
